The SMARTER Goal-Setting System

How do we know if we are successful if we don’t even know what success looks like for us? How do we know if you we reached our goals if you don’t even have a goal clearly defined?

Okay. Assuming that you already know how important goal-setting is, the next question is how do we set goals exactly?

One effective method is called SMARTER system. It is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, Time-Bound, Evaluate, and Reward.

S – Specific

Be as specific as we can. For example, set goals such as “I will write a 50,000-word book” instead of “I want to be rich.”

M – Measurable

Instead of “to lose weight”, say that “to lose 1 pound every week” or something like that so that it is measurable.

A – Actionable

Actionable is about HOW we can achieve our goals. What is our action? So begin our goals with a verb. Like WORK OUT 5 days a week, or READ 10 pages of a book per day.

R – Relevant

Know clearly why you want to set that goal of yours. Just because someone else’s career goal is to write a book doesn’t mean you have to do the exact same thing. You might enjoy public speaking and want to have more speaking engagements. Pick the goals that are relevant and meaningful to you.

T – Time-Bound

Your goal could be to write a 50,000-word book BY THE END OF June 2019. This might sound too ambitious, but if you break it down into shorter time periods, you will realize that if you write 500 words a day, then you only need 100 days to accomplish your goal. So you actually have more than enough time. That’s why it helps to make your goal time-bound!

E – Evaluate

Set checkpoints and evaluate your goals regularly. Or set milestones. If you find your goals no longer relevant, then adjust your goals. If you have not yet met your goal by the deadline you set, don’t beat yourself up, simply set another deadline. Remember “There are no unrealistic goals, only unrealistic deadlines.”

R – Reward

Give yourself a reward to motivate yourself even more. It might not work for anyone but it doesn’t hurt to try.

This system has helped me to achieve many of my goals, I sincerely hope that it will help you to have a productive 2019!
